Copy Cat Cafe Vienna Instant Coffee

ree

Have you ever been watching videos and suddenly come across a classic commercial from your childhood that brings back treasured memories? That happened here recently. A commercial for "General Foods International Cafe Vienna Coffee" appeared. It shows an actress arranging a coffee gathering with her friends, using fine china and mentioning that she does special things for them, like serving this sophisticated coffee. As a kid, I thought only "rich" people would drink that coffee because, in our house, it was always Folgers. After getting married and having kids, I was finally able to enjoy that fancy coffee, but I hadn't had any in years.

After seeing that commercial, I was excited to try that fancy coffee once more. However, in 2010, General Foods International was completely rebranded as Maxwell House International Café. I'm certain their product is excellent, but I've decided to make my own.

Here is the recipe I use for the Cafe Vienna instant coffee.

Ingredients:

1/4 cup instant coffee granules (Maxwell House recommended for authenticity)

1/4 cup + 3 tablespoons granulated sugar

1/2 cup + 1 tablespoon powdered non-dairy creamer (like Coffee-mate original)

1/8 teaspoon ground cinnamon

To Prepare the Dry Mix

Grind the coffee: Place the instant coffee granules in a coffee grinder (or spice grinder) and pulse until it's a fine powder. This step is key for the smooth, cafe-style texture.

Combine everything: In a medium bowl, whisk together the ground coffee, sugar, creamer, and cinnamon until evenly blended and lump-free.

Store: Transfer to an airtight container or jar. It keeps indefinitely at room temperature in a cool, dry spot.

To Brew a Serving

Scoop 2 tablespoons of the mix into a mug.

Pour in 8 ounces (1 cup) of boiling water.

Stir vigorously for 20-30 seconds until fully dissolved and frothy. Enjoy hot!
