Rice Packets

Updated: Sep 9, 2025

Did you know that white rice has many purposes and can be used for more than eating? I use rice in many different applications.

Have you ever had a spice like salt or onion powder become clumped up and solid as a rock? That is because it has been exposed to humidity or moisture. This is a common issue in Central Minnesota, especially during the summer, when humidity levels climb.

Instead of throwing away your spices and spending more money on another container, only to end up with the same result, follow this tip, it will save you a lot of aggravation and a little money too.

Tools needed:

Funnel

Food-safe storage bag

Toothpick or a sharply pointed tool

Ingredients:

Instant white rice

Directions:

Place the funnel into the storage bag and pour rice into the bag. Seal the bag. Poke a few holes in each side of the bag.

Uses:

Put the rice packet in your sugar container, bouillon containers, etc.

You can omit the storage bag and put some rice directly into your spice containers that have a shaker top with small holes (to keep the rice in the container). This works really well for

salt shakers.

If you have something like onion powder or garlic powder that has suffered the fate of humidity, don't throw it out. Put it in your blender or food processor, grind it up again, and put it back into the container with a rice packet this time.
