Environmental Allergy Relief Rollerball Recipe

Updated: Sep 9

Environmental allergies such as hay fever, dust, mold, and pet dander are commonplace today. I don't remember many people in my life as a kid having allergies.

Today, everyone in my immediate family experiences allergies, with varying degrees of severity.

When my son was little, he reacted to a boxelder tree that my husband cut down. This reaction, known as chemosis, caused the clear membranes in his eyes to swell. It terrified me as a mother. At that time, it was the most severe allergic reaction I had ever witnessed. My daughter and husband both suffer greatly from hay fever. The result for them can be a severe sinus infection.

Sometimes taking over-the-counter allergy meds is not enough to combat the symptoms. Here is an essential oil rollerball recipe that may help you on those really bad days.

ree

Ingredients:

6 drops Lavender essential oil (calms irritation, reduces inflammation, and has antihistamine-like properties)

4 drops Peppermint essential oil (opens airways, provides cooling relief for sinus congestion)

4 drops Lemon essential oil (supports respiratory clarity, detoxifies, and boosts immunity)

Carrier oil (e.g., jojoba oil or fractionated coconut oil) to fill the 10ml bottle

10ml glass roller bottle (amber or dark glass to protect oils)

Instructions:

Prepare the Bottle: Ensure the roller bottle is clean and dry. Sterilize by boiling for 5 minutes and letting it dry completely to prevent contamination.

Add Essential Oils: Add 6 drops of lavender, 4 drops of peppermint, and 4 drops of lemon to the roller bottle using a dropper or directly from the oil bottles.

Fill with Carrier Oil: Top off the bottle with jojoba or fractionated coconut oil, leaving a small space for the rollerball. Jojoba is skin-nourishing, while fractionated coconut oil is lightweight and odorless.

Secure and Mix: Insert the rollerball top and screw on the cap. Gently shake to blend the oils.

Label: Label the bottle (e.g., “Allergy Relief Blend”) for easy identification.

Patch Test: Apply a small amount to your inner forearm and wait 24 hours to confirm no skin sensitivity.

Usage:

Application: Roll onto pulse points (wrists, behind ears, or base of neck) or under the nose for aromatherapy benefits. Rub wrists together and inhale deeply to help clear nasal passages. Reapply up to 3 times daily during allergy flare-ups.

Cleaning Tip: To keep the rollerball clean, apply to clean fingers and then to the skin, or wipe the rollerball with a cloth after use.

Safety Notes:

Dilution: The 3% dilution (14 drops total in 10ml) is safe for adults for short-term use. For children (ages 5+), reduce to a 1% dilution (2 drops total, e.g., 1 drop lavender, 1 drop lemon, omit peppermint).

Precautions:

Avoid applying to skin exposed to direct sunlight, as lemon oil can be phototoxic; use under clothing or at night. Avoid peppermint near the face for young children or those with sensitive skin. Do not use during pregnancy or breastfeeding without consulting a healthcare provider. Consult a doctor if allergies are severe or if you’re on medication.

Storage:

Store in a cool, dry place away from sunlight to preserve oil potency.
