Plug-In Air Freshener Refill

I think many people know the mall store with the cute blue checkerboard bags, offering a variety of delightful lotions, soaps, and air fresheners, which tend to be a bit on the pricey side. I love their air fresheners, but I just don't want to pay the price for them, and admittedly, I've never looked at their ingredients.

I was in the Dollar Tree a few weeks ago and saw that they are carrying the refills for some name-brand plug-in warmers. They were really inexpensive, and I think I know why. On the front of the packaging, it says "DANGER POISON Harmful or fatal if swallowed". Wow, glad I bought that product. NOT! In the trash it's going. The list of ingredients on the back of the package includes some things that I can't pronounce, and I don't have a chemistry degree to know what they are.

Like a lot of things I am doing now, using more natural, less chemically based products just feels better.

I have decided to make my own refills using the essential oils I already have on hand. Here is what I used for 1 Refill.

Essential Oils

3 drops Sweet Orange (bright, fruity top note)

3 drops Lemon (zesty, cleansing lift)

3 drops Clove (warm, spicy depth)

2 drops Rosemary (herbaceous, focusing clarity)

1 drop Cinnamon Leaf (sweet-spicy warmth – use sparingly to avoid overpowering)

1 drop Eucalyptus (cool, invigorating freshness)

Carrier Liquid: 10-15 ml distilled water

Step Instructions

Clean your diffuser's glass or plastic bulb thoroughly with rubbing alcohol and dish soap. Dry completely to avoid residue.

Using a small funnel, add the essential oil drops directly into the bulb in the order listed, Gently swirl to combine.

Fill the bulb to about halfway (10-15 ml) with your carrier liquid. Leave 1/4 inch headspace at the top for the wick. If using water, shake gently with the emulsifier to blend.

Cut the wick to fit (bottom reaches liquid, top protrudes 1/4 inch). Dip the bottom end in the mixture for 10 minutes to saturate, then insert.

Screw the bulb onto your plug-in warmer base and plug into a wall outlet. Scent emerges in about 5-10 minutes.
